A Mars Journey to Protect Our Soul
The Hero's Journey takes us out into the world to individuate, just as Mars is the planet just past Earth, directing us outward into the universe. This journey and planet help us to assert ourselves in the world, overcome dragons, find our own authority and accountability, and connect us with a deeper purpose to contribute to the world. It takes us from seeking glory to stepping into duty and empowerment (if we stay true).
I have a 12-stage structure that I use—my take on the Hero’s Journey, as shown by Mars.
The Cancer Hero's Journey
The Quest for True Home
January 15, 2025 - January 20, 2027
A 26-month epic quest seeded in the realm of home, heart, and belonging
On January 15, 2025, as Mars opposed the Sun in Cancer, a new Earth-Mars synodic, or journey, seed cracked open in the dark. This journey asks: What does it mean to truly belong? What must I protect? What home must I fight for?
This is not a quest for external conquest, but for internal sanctuary. Like Odysseus's 20-year journey to return to Ithaca, or Dorothy's realization that "there's no place like home," this Mars cycle asks you to become the warrior of your own heart.
The Cancer seed carries questions of:

Protecting what you love without building walls

The Hero's Moment
You stand at the summit of your last victory—a Gemini-seeded journey that taught you about connection, communication, curiosity, and mental agility. Perhaps you've finally found your people, learned to articulate your truth, built bridges between worlds, or mastered the art of adaptability. You've integrated the Trickster's wisdom—how to move fluidly, think quickly, hold multiple perspectives.
Now you're landing in Cancer territory—coming home to yourself after coming home to your mind and community. The mental mastery you achieved is creating a foundation for something deeper: emotional belonging.
This is your Shire—the peaceful home that Frodo enjoys before the Ring arrives. You've woven yourself into community, found your voice, connected the dots. But there's pressure building beneath the surface of all this connection. Something new is stirring in the foundations, asking not just "do I understand?" but "do I truly belong?"
The Opposition (January 15): The call appears on the horizon. You feel it—a disturbance in your emotional force field. All that mental connection and communication you mastered... now your heart wants something more primal. The quest is coming, and it's about roots, not branches.

The structures crack. What held you together starts falling apart. This is Inanna descending to the underworld, removing one garment at each gate. Your old identity—the clever communicator, the bridge-builder, the one who could talk their way through anything—can no longer contain what's growing.
There's grief here. Fear. Maybe bitterness. But also—if you're honest—excitement. New neural pathways are forming. You're wiring for something bigger. The mind mastered its lessons; now the heart demands its turn.

Help arrives. Not always in the form you expected—maybe it's a person, a realization, a book, a moment of grace. Something gives you the sword. Suddenly, you have courage or capacity that wasn't there before.
This is Obi-Wan giving Luke the lightsaber. Haymitch teaching Katniss strategy. Your fairy godmother appearing with the dress and the carriage.
In Leo, this aid often comes through creative expression, play, or someone seeing your authentic light. The mentor might be encouraging you to take up more space, to shine, to stop apologizing for your bigness or your feelings.

You commit. You cross over. There's no going back to who you were. This is Jonah in the whale, Persephone eating the pomegranate seeds, Dante entering the dark wood. You've fallen apart; now you pull yourself together in a new configuration.
Leo's final weeks: One last burst of courageous self-expression before...
Virgo emerges (June 17): The initiation completes through practical re-organization. Spring after winter. You're IN the quest now, and you need systems, discernment, and devotion to detail.
This is where you make new decisions to honor new impulses. The old life's routines—built for mental agility and social connection—don't work anymore. You're building new ones around emotional truth and daily devotion.

Skill-building time. Resource gathering. You're finding your footing on this new path through trial and error, success and failure. This is Rocky training on the steps, Katniss learning to work the cameras, Harry's years at Hogwarts.
You're also discovering who's with you and who isn't. Alliances form. Enemies reveal themselves. Strong preferences emerge—you're developing a clear sense of what you stand for and what you stand against. Not everyone who celebrated your mental agility will support your emotional depth.

The Hero's Moment
You meet yourself in the mirror of another. The shadow, the desire, the unintegrated parts—they appear externally, usually in someone fascinating and dangerous. This is Odysseus with Circe, Dante with Beatrice, the Buddha facing Mara's daughters.
Projection happens here. Blame. Finger-pointing. "If only THEY would change..." This is also where heroes become villains—when desire or shadow overwhelms the quest's purpose. The emotional intensity you've been cultivating can become obsession, possession, or drowning.
Scorpio (Sept 22-Nov 4): The depth of desire/shadow is INTENSE; transformation or destruction beckons
Sagittarius emerges (Nov 4): Temptation to abandon emotional depth for philosophical escape; "I'm over it, let's move on"

The Hero's Moment
The confrontation with authority. The thing that has held power over you—father, boss, old god, internalized oppressor, your own inner tyrant—must be faced. This is Luke confronting Vader, Simba returning to face Scar, Moana facing Te Kā.
You take full accountability for your emotional life. No more "they made me feel" or "I can't feel safe because..." You claim your sovereignty over your own heart.
Sagittarius weeks: Philosophical rebellion; questioning all inherited beliefs about feelings and belonging
Capricorn (Dec 15-Jan 23): Direct confrontation with structural/ancestral emotional patterns; the family system

Pisces (March 2-April 9): Dissolution, mystical death, oceanic feeling, union with divine love
Aries emerges (April 9): Resurrection! The divine warrior of the heart is born; pure action from love

The boon is often this: True home is not a place or even a feeling—it's a state of being. You belong to yourself. You are the sanctuary.
There's temptation to stay here in this moment of discovery and contentment. Why return to the ordinary world when you've touched this truth?

CANCER RETURN (Aug 11): Full circle! Back to the seed sign during the flight—you're proving your belonging, your home, your heart-truth is YOURS to claim

True mastery includes receiving aid. The sovereign heart still needs community. The one who belongs to themselves can finally truly belong WITH others.

The Hero's Moment
The difficult return. You bring your treasure, your transformed heart, your emotional boon back to the ordinary world—and it doesn't fit. You're misunderstood. They don't get it. The pearl you've retrieved seems worthless here. People might say "you've gotten too emotional" or "you're not as fun as you used to be."
But you know something they don't: You've come home to yourself. And that's worth the misunderstanding.
This is where you learn to translate mystical experience into practical service. To temper the new emotional truth with the old mental skills. To live in both worlds—feeling deeply AND thinking clearly—without being torn apart.

The next quest will seed in Virgo: themes of service, perfection, healing, devotion to craft, and humble mastery. But that's a journey for another day.
