Our City, Our Pulse

I think of the rising sign as the city we live in. It holds the pulse of our makeup and gives us a certain quality of initiative, drive, and orientation. Just as a New Yorker is a bit brusque and unapologetic and a Londoner is posh and minds their own business, a rising sign gives you the same kind of impressionistic flavor that a home city gives someone. A Leo rising’s pulse is warm and in command, while a Scorpio rising holds a pulse of magnetic intensity. The rising sign also determines how the zodiacal map orients your categories of life, or neighborhoods—where home, the financial district, skid row, and the museums are situated for you.

In this system, I work with the Earth—directly opposite your Sun—as a chart planet in its own right. (If your Sun is Virgo, your Earth is Pisces.) While the Sun and Earth each have the zodiac oriented within them, the work here focuses on awareness through the Sun and gnosis, or experiential knowing, through the Earth. These don’t exactly indicate which neighborhood the focus is on, but rather a quality of experience taking place. Our rising sign chart across the astrological seasons of the year is like a map showing where these qualitative experiences occur.

One rule makes all of this checkable: houses are always counted from the sign in question—your Sun chart counts from your Sun, your Earth chart from your Earth, and your rising chart from your ascendant. So the same transiting season can land in three different houses depending on which chart you’re reading.

Rising Sign Chart vs. Sun Sign Chart

For example, as I write this, it is Gemini Solar Season. For my Virgo Sun/awareness, this brings focus to my aspirations around writing and what I need to do to become more consciously masterful with communication. In my Sagittarius rising chart, this is playing out in my 7th house areas of relationships, harmonizing, aesthetics/design, and advocacy. As a metaphor, you could say my life revolves around and becomes more conscious in areas where dates might take place, in law firms, with agents, or around design spaces. With Gemini flavoring this, it would be like life feeling lit up around parks and exploring neighborhoods where dates involve walking or that take you on a drive somewhere local or biking around, around IP law firms, writing agents, or design spaces that are flowery (literally, like gardens) or that are simply maximalist in nature (flowery graphics or interiors and spaces with vibrant design).

For me, life is currently lit up around spaces of design — designing a little garden in my yard, sprucing up my patio, and creating regular spaces in my home for flowers to make my interior feel more alive. I’m also planning a date night that requires a small road trip, and have been toying around with reaching out to writing agents. The spaces on my map that are lit up with activity have to do with 7th house themes. With my Sun, my reach toward more mastery or focus on writing/communication/community is more of a mind thing. I’m thinking about goals I need to make, about plans that will help me reach better, and about new ways I want to use messaging more professionally. I’m also actively communicating in my professional realm, sharing, through writing, my Mystically in Season system.

Hopefully, this helps you see how a Sun chart and a rising sign chart work at the same time, as different sections are lit up in a solar, conscious way. Mark on a map where life is active with the rising sign house lit up by the Sun, and note what your mind is conscious of and reaching toward greater awareness through which part of its chart is lit up.

Rising Sign Chart vs. Earth Sign Chart

While it’s a little more subtle, we can also note how the Earth season shows up in a rising sign chart versus an Earth sign chart. As I said above, I’m writing this during Gemini Solar Season. The Earth Season is always directly opposite, so the Earth season as I write this is Sagittarius. In my rising sign chart, the Earth grounds and anchors my 1st house, since I’m a Sagittarius rising. Earth has an experiential, somatic tone. My body is craving solo time to feel itself, feel more centered, and find its authentic pulse. You have to stop and reflect when it comes to Earth.

Notice that the Earth’s pull is receptive at its core—it’s about stillness, taking in the environment, letting the body feel held. Yet receptivity sometimes asks the body to prepare its ground first. As I reflect, I can see that my personal spaces are where I’ve wanted my body to feel held—my office, my bedroom, my yard—and I’ve wanted these spaces to feel clean and purged of debris. I didn’t consciously decide to deep-clean them; the impulse arrived as a body-felt need to clear them so they could hold me, so I could settle and receive. The action serves the stillness rather than replacing it. I’ve also made these spaces more Sagittarian, sprucing them up with artwork from around the world and feeling into how to expand and open them with more space (and dreaming about a little home patio on the Mediterranean or in Istanbul). As you can see, it’s possible to drop a pin on my most closely held space in terms of my rising sign chart/map and where Earth is visiting.

In my Pisces Earth chart, the season’s Sagittarius Earth is anchoring into my 10th house of focus, responsibility, and mastery (same as the Sun—the houses activated always match). Through the Earth, this is more about holding position and knowing mastery through experience than about the Sun reaching and consciously striving for these things. With this area of my Earth chart ruled by Sagittarius, I anchor position and authority in my life through the adventures I’ve been on, the narratives I’ve experienced, and the perspectives my body holds by instinct. This one is hard to articulate, or to see clearly for myself. I can give an example, though. I recently brought up a chapter of my life from childhood that was unique. To me, it was a simple throwaway in associative relating—I thought nothing of mentioning it—but the surprising response I got was that I should write a memoir someday, of all the things I’ve experienced. Reflecting on this, I suppose a Pisces Earth body is boundaryless—it doesn’t file experience into tidy categories the way a more structured Earth might—and so the experiences it accrues take on that same quality: they run together, accumulate without edges, and end up immense and inexplicable even to the person living them. I can see how lived experience through this Earth sign/body would form a mastery of what adventure, journeys, and lived perspective feel like. Or, put another way, having lived with open boundaries, I do feel a sort of focus and dedication in my body to process some kind of arc or throughline for what it’s lived.

Again, in comparing my rising sign chart to my Earth sign chart, while I have to think about it a little more than I do the Sun in my rising chart, I can still place a location pin on where the Earth is in my rising chart—but not so much for transiting Earth in my Earth chart. This one feels more like a presence being carried, or an openness of my body to epic experiences and journeys that are steep and require persistence, in relation to a body that is boundaryless and nebulous.

What Pulse Do Your Sun & Earth Contain?

A particular Sun sign born with an Aries rising versus a Libra rising will produce drastically different breeds of that Sun—because the rising sign decides which house the Sun falls into, and a Sun working through the 1st house of self expresses very differently than the same Sun working through the 7th house of relationship. While this is something I’ll explore more deeply in books I’m plotting, it’s worth pondering how your rising sign gives your Sun–Earth axis a flavor all its own.

As an example, I’m a Virgo Sun/Pisces Earth. I have typical Virgo Sun qualities, such as being picky, analytical, and loving rituals and rhythms. But, as I often say, I’m a terrible example of a Virgo, and some of that, I believe, has to do with being a Sagittarius rising—a pulse that is freedom-loving, a bit messy, and big-picture oriented rather than mired in the typical Virgo particularities. This also makes me not just a Virgo Sun living with a Sagittarius pulse, but a Virgo Sun living in the 10th house. My Virgo analytical and refining awareness is filtered through a Sagittarius pulse, motivated by perspective and narrative, and in the 10th house, it’s also concerned with mastery and focus. Put together, in a rising sign city oriented around seeking, perspective, and narrative, I hone a masterful awareness of refinement. If I didn’t have so much unconventionality—with lots of 11th house planets and a draconic Pisces Sun (a soul-level overlay that asks for spaciousness and mysticism)—a great way to direct this configuration would have been a career-focused life as a literary editor.

My Pisces Earth, planted in a Sagittarius chart, lives in the 4th house. Where my boundaryless body needs anchoring and containing is through a dreamy or artistic home, spiritual family, fantastical daydreaming, healing self-care, and artistic literature. A Pisces Earth born with, say, a Libra rising would fall in the 6th house, and so would anchor through artistic work, rituals, and wellness.

This is just a bit of fun to think about. What house of your rising chart are your Sun and Earth in? How does your rising sign’s pulse and motivation influence how your Sun and Earth express themselves? And how do the houses they live in point out where you tend to focus your awareness and anchoring within your rising sign’s pulse?
