An Awareness of Order
While each solar season highlights a dimension of our Sun’s awareness and creativity, its core solar energy is simultaneously growing and developing from seed to blossoming to fruiting to integration and solidification. Our solar dimensions and core growth arc work together in beautiful symphony, resulting in a deepened awareness, year after year.

Your Sun’s Core Development
When I look at the yearly journey arc of a Sun sign, I start its journey at the summit of the chart, similar to how new moon seeds, to me, align with Capricorn’s dark summit. I start the year at Winter Solstice’s darkest point of the year, aligning with 0° of Capricorn, new moon’s seed in the dark where there is no light between Sun and Moon, and each solar season’s Sun, in my opinion, seeds its own growth journey at its season’s new moon.
When moving solar seasons, the separation of signs between the seeding sign and the current solar sign indicates the phase of growth that the solar seed is in. This maps somewhat like a story structure, such as the Hero’s Journey. Because the Sun has a lot to do with the kind of awareness we have, and its development has a lot to do with maturing, I like to call it the Coming-Of-Age Journey. The growth stages have similarities to the houses in a regular chart, but with some slight tweaks due to the nature of one energy being tracked versus the whole zodiac.

Your Sun’s Dimensions of Awareness
We can also view the Sun’s horoscope chart with a house view, putting the Sun sign where the rising sign goes, indicating the awareness we are centered in within the zodiac.
The signs of the zodiac then order around our Sun in a counter-clockwise direction. As the Sun shifts zodiac signs every 30 days, it highlights within our Sun a dimension of awareness that is oriented in a specific way for our Sun.
For example, for an Aries Sun sign, when the Sun moves through Leo, it illuminates a dimension of awareness having to do with leadership and creativity flavored with Leo qualities of heart and courage.
Sun sign houses are different from rising sign houses in that the categories are more about dimensions of awareness versus categories of life in general. a 5th house in a rising sign chart shows that the area of life having to do with kids, leadership, and sex—things happening in this part of life. In a Sun chart, the 5th house is more of an awareness versusu activity taking place.
How The Two Charts Work Together
Starting the seed growth at the Summit will put its development a quarter turn behind the dimension of awareness being illuminated each season in its chart. This 90° angle creates torque between the development of a particular awareness and a dimension of awareness. It helps to create a challenge to push into and the right angle to push with effectiveness. This is what creates growth and movement in our developmental maturity.
An example that is playing out in my life as I write this:
The Sun is currently in Taurus, illuminating the 9th dimension, or house, of my Virgo Sun chart. A day or two after this season started, my dad called with some out-of-the-blue news. He came across an article about Canada having recently changed its citizenship laws to make it easier to become a citizen through descent, even up to a great-grandparent. His grandmother (my great-grandmother) was Canadian. Being a Virgo, Taurus illuminates things having to do with foreign affairs, and Taurus brings a quality of value and nature to this. For at least five to eight years, I have longed to gain citizenship somewhere that better aligns with my values, but that also has land that feels more nourishing to me—plenty of water and less direct sun in the summer (being a redhead). Canada fits this bill nicely. Also funny that the ruler of the season, Venus, was crossing Uranus, the planet of surprise, the day this all came to light.
The dimension of awareness being illuminated sparked something for my Virgo seed chart to reach for. Virgo seed development had just moved into a stage of needing to find purpose, organize life, and create rhythms that hone skill. Guess what applying for citizenship requires? A lot of details, organizing, a new sense of purpose, and being of service (I’m heading up this project for my whole family, juggling 5 applications, sourcing birth registrations, researching application best practices, etc). The dimension trigger gave me something to reach for, inspiring me to push into my yearly seed’s growing edge—developing a new awareness of purpose and service as I reach for broadened horizons. Will our applications be approved? Who knows, but the point is the growth taking place due to this configuration of dimensions and seed development.
Some fun Intermediate jargon that you can skip if astrology is new to you: In my solar return chart, which will show a lot about the individual’s yearly seed, Taurus is my rising sign with Venus, its ruler, in the 4th house of home and ancestry. If I look at my Sun in this chart, it doesn’t necessarily indicate a move or new citizenship, but when I look at the angles it is making, it is trine the part of fortune in the 9th house of foreign affairs. The ruler of my part of fortune is in the 11th house of acquisition, or from the part of fortune houses, it’s in the 3rd house of movement and immigration, just in front of the north node of new directions. Just some interesting tidbits gained by looking at the solar return chart!
Aries yearly Development guide
Your Sun holds an awareness of order. Being the first sign of the zodiac, following Pisces, where everything dissolved and felt chaotic, you are keenly aware of beginnings. Before we can feel confident pushing outward into the world, we need to feel oriented. Your Sun has a distinct capacity for taking raw, messy beginnings and deciphering where the start line is, what’s north/south/east/west, hence where to plant flags, stake poles, and find direction with clarity and willpower.

While the awareness that had been developing in your Aries nature over the past year solidifies as much as it will, this is also the season where a new crack starts to form under the weight of the awareness you are now responsible for. At your solar return (your birthday), a new seed is activated under the pressure—a new map of the kind of awareness your Aries Sun will be asked to develop over the course of the coming year.
Pay attention to inner wishes coming to your mind’s eye, around feeling alive, oriented, independent, and assertive. What goals and plans can you start to conceive of? What intentions around drive and action feel important?
The Sun is lighting up your Sun’s own Aries dimension of self, or your Sun’s 1st house of self-awareness, self-determination, and drive. What is your most passionate desire? Physicality, energy level, feeling strong, feeling clear, and the need to take action to put something in order could be the trigger that prompts you to push into your year’s matured foresight and make a plan and set intentions with long-term outcomes.
With Aries ruling this 1st dimension of Self, urgency and order are doubly amplified. Some years, this will feel good, with an urgent matter coming from your own desires and impulses, and sometimes an urgent matter will arise externally (good or challenging) that triggers your desire for a long-term plan.
Stage 2 | Taurus Season - Call to Action

The seed cracks open this season. One way of seeing is starting to shake off, sometimes painfully or knotted and sometimes with grace or excitement. A shedding process calls you toward a new adventure. What future is possible now that you are breaking free of a limitation—a box that once brought security?
Thank that box, the brittle seed shell, the skin you are shedding, but look toward the future. Feel a bit of electricity plugging in with new impulses. Are new ideas, experimental notions, or friendly others presenting you with a very different model or concept of life? A dream is starting to find its circuitry.
At the same time, the Sun is lighting up your 2nd dimension of values, worth, senses, preferences, pleasure, beauty, and material matters. What do you long for? What pleases you as you explore new skin and new preferences? Financial matters, values, and beauty may circle you this season, sparking a trigger that has you pushing into experimenting with the new skin you are growing into.
With Taurus ruling this 2nd dimension of values, what you possess, what you are worth, or feeling heard and appreciated may be the trigger that has you seeking new possibilities for your future self, or the kind of future you want to contribute to. While there can be tenderness in this stage, try to stay experimental. Push against electricity and excitement to help you evolve toward what feels newly valuable and beautiful in life.
Stage 3 | Gemini Season - Inspiration
Surrender meets Pathways of possibility
May 21 - June 20
Remnants of past shadows holding you back from a new adventure are seen and surrendered this season. Echos felt—old patterns arising that are understood and let go of. Forgiveness, release, and healing arrive. This transcendent quality brings inspiration and guidance from beyond, synchronicities, and downloads landing with deep ah-ha’s. What do you now understand from a higher and more fluid state?
When you let go, psychic space is cleared. New consciousness streams in, swirling in your awareness. Not concretely enough to grab hold of. Gentle mist and shapes in clouds. You feel the impressions of a new way of seeing while understanding what was transcended, able to make art out of both.
At the same time, the Sun lights up your 3rd dimension of mind, communication, connection, and community. It’s a dimension of possibility and new pathways. What information are you chasing? What flirtations lead to meandering paths? Possibilities spark to life, triggering a push into your growing edge—letting go of shadows preventing you from the delights of nectar and honey, teasing you forward.
With Gemini ruling this 3rd dimension, intellect, belonging, identity, or feeling a sense of community may be the trigger helping you let go of debris and reach for understanding. While there can be chaos in this stage, try to stay flexible and push against inspiration that helps you walk into this threshold time of uncertainty between an old awareness and a new awareness.
Stage 4 | Cancer Season - New World
The Jungle meets foundations and stability

The development of your Aries awareness storms boldly into a new level, like entering an unfamiliar forest or jungle. What worked for you in the past is no longer cutting it. Just like teenagers are fickle, quick-witted, changeable, and hormonal, this 30-day period is your yearly teenage mode. It’s a time to meander and get a bit lost in possibility. You might also find sudden infatuations that are desirable or aversive. These fixations likely point toward dimensions of your awareness that you possess and haven’t developed or that you’ve repressed. It’s a season to get lost to find yourself.
At the same time, the Sun lights up your 6th dimension of practice, skill, service, and refinement. It’s the dimension of purpose. There may be a critical moment that arrives, asking you to organize, be useful, or serve others. While it may take away from your meandering, it can give you a sense of meaning.
With Virgo ruling this 6th dimension, work, health, duty, or practice may be the trigger that gets you pushing into your growing edge of intelligence and pathways to help you reach toward purpose with an intelligent and agile hand. This is the halfway point of your year’s unfolding journey. There can be a feeling of insecurity after all of last season’s meandering. Where am I actually going? It's a season to pull yourself and your direction together by going inward and downward—deepening and connecting to soul and inner alignment. It’s a season of deciding to grow up and stand on your own feet around your developing awareness.
Where have you let external forces dictate or control your recent awareness—mimicking, living up to expectation, seeking approval, going along with the herd, leaning on someone else’s confidence? It’s time to find the ground you stand on so you can take control of your direction and development.
The Sun is lighting up your 7th dimension of relationships, mirroring, fairness, and harmonizing. It’s through seeing yourself in reflection that you receive a clearer view of who you are and how your actions affect the world and others around you. This can highlight where cooperation needs more or less focus, how you are in balance with life, and how the trust you establish with others can boost your self-trust.
With Libra ruling this 7th dimension, tensions, partners, aesthetics, and legal matters could be triggers that require you to push into your growing edge of maturing and pulling a more stable sense of yourself together.
